Not trite May 28, 2008 J. Johnson 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Dream Big should have been the Idol coronation song, but Cook put as much of his style into this song as he could, magic rainbows and all. It's actually a fairly uplifting song, and still gets to me as I think about his win on the finale. Compared to other coronation songs, it's the best since Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This". However, I don't believe the song is at all representative of what to expect from Cook in the future. For those of you who missed out on Analog Heart before it was pulled, that album was all sorts of brilliant.
Don't judge David Cook by this song alone! May 29, 2008 Hija del Sol 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
As far as this studio recording of the song goes, it seems to lack a little of the passion of his performance at the Idol finale (of course, the excitement of that moment would be hard to duplicate). I'm also not a fan of the backup singers the producers are addicted to throwing in everywhere, which greatly ups the "cheese" factor that everyone is commenting on. And although he has said that he "genuinely likes it" - and it *is* catchy and extremely upbeat - it's not what he's best at or probably wants to be known for. Thus, I'm kind of sad for David Cook that this is his first big song, since it really isn't a great one and he had no choice in the matter. But aside from all that, Cook does have a brilliant voice. In case you're in doubt after previewing this clip, check out his live or studio Idol performances of "Music of the Night", "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Innocent", "Always Be My Baby" or "Eleanor Rigby", just to name a few of my personal favorites. They can all be found on YouTube, as can his Idol finale performance, if nowhere else. I'm excited to hear what his future will bring us... (Note to TPTB: Could you possibly have found a photo of David that makes him look LESS like he's having the time of his life?!? Jeez.) ;-)
Great artist, mediocre song May 30, 2008 Daniel Beebe 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
David Cook is going to be great. We've already seen his potential with his performances of Hello, Billie Jean, Always Be My Baby, All I Really Need is You, and (no matter what Simon Cowell says) The World I Know. The winning song this year is pretty much like last year's. The lyrics are cliche and the melody is very safe and formulaic. I expect a lot more from David Cook's future album - assuming the record company doesn't force him to sing mediocre songs like this one.
David Cook is a craftsman May 27, 2008 LJ (Pittsburgh, PA United States) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
When you look at the lyrics themselves, this song is absolutely cheese filled. I wouldn't necessarily like the song itself; however, David Cook shows that he's a true craftsman with his music. He took as song he had to sing and gave it his own indy rock flair. I can listen to this song over and over again and not be phased by it's "magic rainbows."
AMAZING May 30, 2008 C. Drummond (FL) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This man can sing! Looking forward to a FULL ALBUM!!! Have to admit the winning songs on Idol are normally a little on the cheesy side BUT he makes this one into something special.
