4 out of 5 stars A serious driver's friend   June 24, 2007

3 weeks ago my CEL light came on. The car ran fine, there was no sensation of a defect. I could pull the battery and wait 5 minutes, which is a reset spec for OBD II without a reader, but what if the issue was serious, later on? Calling the car dealership, a diagnostic ran $75. A Toyota TSB released in 2006 said a common issue was simply a loose gas cap. I tightened it, and tried to reset the CEL. No go. Ordered the reader, as I'll need it anyway for other issues as they arise with the CEL. Followed the instruction, diagnosed the issue, checked it against the Toyota troubleshooting manual, and presto, CEL is gone. For $47 versus the $75, not only is the problem fixed, I know how to do it [ priceless!] and I now have a tool to diagnose these pesky electronic computer modules that feeds data to the CEL, just to insure the dealership is up to snuff, or I can fix it myself [sometimes it can be just a loose hose.]

It rates 4/5 for 2 reasons:

The cord is short. Its OK, but the unit will not raise to a comfortable chest height connected to the OBD II jack, one has to crouch down;

No backlight, crouched in the dark driver pedal area, a small LED or something would help a ton, given how dark it is down there and the cabin light doesn't light one's feet.

Other than that, its so simple even a cave man can do it.

I have read down thru the reviews and I would like to point out some issues I have with some low scores..

First, why would someone give a low score to something they purchased knowing it had the least features of any other units. The ratings are about the unit in question.

Second, if you read the code, then start throwing parts at your car having no mechanical knowledge, don't come here and start complaining that this unit didn't do your dishes for you too.

This is an inexpensive tool that will allow you to get the information from you car, and can also clear a CEL, 'Check Engine Light' that was set off because of a DTC, 'Diagnostic Trouble Code.' I gave it 5 stars because it does exactly what it says it does, does it well, and is well built. No E-bay garbage here. It will not, however, give you a mechanics point of view. That is training that you will need to buy from elsewhere ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Great little product   January 19, 2006

This is a great product for that bothersome "check Engine" light that keeps coming on for problems like in my case 'misfire of the engine". The problem isn't a big issue, but you don't know that until you take it to a mechanic, and they charge you an arm and a leg to tell you it's nothing. You can clear the code from the cars computer with a touch of 1 button SWEET. This product has paid for it self on the first use for me. Well worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Worked like a charm   June 28, 2007

The dealership for my VW Passat 2002 wanted to charge me $100 just to tell me why I have the 'Check Engine' sign on. I've been paying this in the past as I had no choice, but this time I wanted to try something different as I didn't like to be kept in the dark. I bought this item for $50 and was able to read the error code. It turns out it was just a cylinder misfire. Then I reset the error and it never came back.

Even if it did, I would at least know what is wrong with my engine so mechanics won't be able to tell me their fairytales and charge me big bucks for it. There is plenty of information on the Internet about each error code in case you want to try to repair it by yourself.

This product is sturdy, well built and worked flawlessly as I plugged it in. If I buy now I would probably go for a more expensive unit from Actron for $79 as it has erro description on the screen, but if you want to save same money you can use this unit and search for the error on the Internet (just search for `OBD' and the error code). Actron also has error code lookup on their site so you don't need to use the software that comes with the unit.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product   March 10, 2006

For the person needing an inexpensive way to know what that Check Engine light on the dashboard means, this is the tool. It's cheaper than taking it to the dealership to have them read the code for you and clear the light 1 TIME! It works with just about any vehicle made since 1996. I have used it on both a Dodge Pickup and a Ford Expedition and it works great. And it's small enough to just leave in the glovebox - especially if you have a vehicle that's as finicky as my Ford. It illuminates the Check Engine every time a cylinder misfires. Being able to know that immediately and also be able to clear the code so the light goes away has been awesome. I know right away that it's the same problem I had before and not something new that really needs to be checked into immediately.
