2 out of 5 stars Don't bother buying the game yet   October 16, 2008

This game is clearly not finished and is yet another title rushed out lacking proper Q/A and server stress testing. Check the official PS3 forums to see the amount of errors people are getting while trying to play this game right now. It's seriously pathetic.

Tonight, I finally received my copy of SOCOM and without hesitation turned on my PS3 and inserted the disc. First thing the game required was to install some game files onto my system. Hrmmmm...I thought installation was only necessary for computer games, but GTA:IV for the PS3 also needed to install game files, so I proceeded onto what was going to be a long journey which would test my breaking point. The install was around 2GB and took roughly 15 minutes to complete. Alright, cool. Once it finished, I launched the game hoping to play. Nope. After all the copyright notices and cutscenes finished playing, I'm greeted with the message: "you must update to firmware 2.50". Okay...I quit the game, go to settings, update, and wait another 15 minutes for the firmware 2.50 update to download and install. I restart the console, select SOCOM and launch the game. Copyright notices, cutscenes, error message: "you must download update 1.10 for SOCOM to continue". An update already? The game hasn't even been oout for 48 hours! Quit game, download the 400MB update (which took 30 minutes on my Verizon FiOS connection), and update. Restart, select SOCOM and launch the game. Copyright notices, cutscenes, error message: "your game files are corrupt. please delete your game saves and restart". What? Are you serious? Quit game, delete game saves, select SOCOM, and the launch game. Copyright notices, cutscenes, error message: "network failed to initialize", !@#$!@#$!@#4, try again, error message: "network failed to initialize", try again, and...connected! Finally!

Tonight I was able to connect to one server and played for about 15 minutes before getting disconnected. I tried connecting to other games after that, but kept receiving "disconnected from server" and "failed to receive data from server" messages all night. All-in-all, I spent over an hour installing the game and its updates, 15 minutes playing on a server, and another 30 minutes after that trying to connect to a second game. I bet Gandhi would have a hard time *not* throwing a controller across the room after what I (and everyone else who has tried to play) experienced. Even without counting the network errors, the game interface is very slow to respond and buggy (sometimes a yes/no message box will appear without being able to select either button).

For the 15 minutes I was able to play, the game graphics and mechanics are nice. It still has the same "feel" I remember from SOCOM 1 and 2 for the PS2.

Bottom line: I cannot wait for the beta testing to be over with and for the developers to release an update that allows the game to work properly. Until then, I guess I'll just pair my socom headset with my phone and walk around looking like a dork

5 out of 5 stars Socom is the best team oriented shooter game   October 15, 2008

First the headset:
It is bigger than the Warhawk Jabra headset and a little heavier too, but it doesn't really bother me.
The headset cradle is really handy for charging the headset.
The light indicator showing if it is fully charge or charging is really cool.
The sound quality is really great and other Socom players have confirmed this with me while in game.

The game installation:
The worst installation ever!!!
First you need to disable auto-start disc or the game will not work.
Then, underneath the game disc on the XMB you need to run an installer first. This thing takes long to install, so be patient.
After that you can run the game, but it will prompt you to download an update, which again takes a long time.
For some reason after the update the game was saying that my saved game profile was corrupted so I had to deleted and run the game again.

The game
The menus are all the same as the beta and all the options you get for weapons, head, face, gear and all those are the same.
I logged into a West Coast server and played in a game with 16 players. The game loaded fast and initially I felt no lag in this Factory map where we were playing TDM. Later another map with a factory flooded and kind of redish loaded and we were playing with the satchel. This time there was a bit of stop and go lag, but for most of the game it was minimal.
I was really impressed with the quality of the graphics and the sound was excellent.
It wasn't as fun as playing with friends though, because those people I was playing with didn't want to communicate and they were just doing their own thing, which is playing like a TDM. It wasn't until I started to communicate that they were like, wha?, Ah? Oh Ok.... bunch of n00bs

Oh, by the way, my Internet is really sucky, 1.5 Mbps download and 300 kbps upload. ATT should be upgrading me to 3.0 down and 500 up tonight. I can't wait.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this game   October 22, 2008

Wow, how this thing was ever considered as a finished product is beyond me. This has to be one of the worst PS3 titles I've encountered. The biggest complaint I have involves the numerous bugs.

Installing the game itself and trying to play it for the first time gives you an error message. It seems as if the 1.10 patch which you are forced to download corrupts your save game. Since the game creates a save game when it first launches it is an impossible error to avoid. After patching the game you will be informed that your save game is corrupt and that you must manually exit the game and delete the save game. Seriously, the game forces you to delete its own save game just to play it for the first time.

While playing this game you will encounter the following: You will get lock-ups leading to a frozen console. You will see other players' characters missing weapons. Most of the servers' "channels" will be full and open games will be difficult to find. You will encounter serious lag during play. Closer aiming will inexplicably cause your character to stand up. The menus will respond slowly to your input.

There are other issues with this game beyond the glitches alone. The graphics are poor for a PS3 title. The textures are muddy and low resolution. The game has plain lighting effects which fail to impress. The blood effects appear to lifted directly from Mortal Kombat. The control scheme is unnecessarily complicated with poor default mapping. All buttons on the controller are used and some serve multiple functions based on the duration of a press. Unfortunately, this doesn't really lead to superior control versus other, similar, games. It's complex for the sake of complexity. Features you expect in a modern game such as the ability to join one of your friend's games in progress, player muting, or even something as simple as your own name being highlighted in a long list of party members are absent. Trophies, which are indicated on the box itself, are nowhere to be found. They are promised in a future patch.

I'll write briefly about the headset as it's likely that's a main draw in the purchase of this bundle. There are a couple of minor problems with the device. The unit itself is quite heavy. It is by far the bulkiest Bluetooth headset I've used. You may feel your ear getting fatigued earlier than you'd hope for because of this. The ear cushion is not adjustable in size so it may flop around in your ear as it dangles from the headset's hook. The main attraction to be found is the giant mute button in the middle of the device. Most headsets created for use with cellular phones have an inconvenient mute function. You will also receive on-screen notifications when changes are made to the unit such as volume adjustment, the mute toggle, and a battery charge indicator.

SOCOM: Confrontation isn't ready for prime time. It has far too many show-stopping bugs and feels unpolished in most aspects. I would stay far away from this game. The headset is worth a purchase, but the game itself is not.

So for the 5 mins i actually managed to play socom it was great, grafix are top notch and game play seemed great but after a horrific sequence of trying to install the game and having corrupt data files and then sitting for hours trying to actually get onto a server with no luck im kind of pissed. People are saying oh give it a week or so and it will be good but how long has this game been in beta and the network is not even remotely serviceable.

If your able to buy the game you should be able to play it out of the box. With the network screwed you have absolutely 0 content and i mean 0! You hit the start button the network fails to initialize and the circle repeats itself till you get mad enough to come on amazon and write a review to warn other people. If there was some form of single player campaign i probably would have cut the developers a little slack but this is really a piss poor effort!

I recommend you wait at least 2 weeks before buying but by that time will you even care ?? All the other players who managed to get the game working from day 1 are now leagues ahead of your game level and able to pwn your face before you realize what is going on.

If reviewers can give spore 1 star for DRM i can give SOCOM 1 star for not actually working. Stop giving this game 5 stars until they fix the servers

Big socom fan very bitter at this experience

*****

Day 2

Ok today ive had no problem getting into the games, the servers are still a little laggy but this is really fun, unfortunately today ive experienced the ol freeze up, seems to be pretty common from what ive heard. Your in a game and you freeze no way around it but a restart still 1 star
