| Editorial Reviews:
Description This concert gem stars the Dave Holland Quintet at the peak of musical maturity: merging passion and logic, spontaneity and group interplay with sparkling clarity. Each musician works as a cog in the delightful engine of swing, relating his phasing to the supple beat laid down by Holland and Smith.Without a piano, without a "standard" song repertoire and with straight-faced concentration, the Quintet creates palpable musical shapes using innovative themes and variations. For all its unique inventiveness, they project utter melodic mellowness on their tunes: Vortex, Homecoming and Wiguts Waits for Weights. The Dave Holland Quintet's "Vortex" is a music lover's greatest reward: a concert that will rivet your attention to every phase that's played and transport you to another world. PERFORMERS: Dave Holland- bass Ken Wheeler- trumpet Robin Eubanks- trombone Steve Coleman- alto sax Marvin "Smitty" Smith- drums

Premier bassist Dave Holland leads remarkable Quintet! July 17, 1999 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Dave Holland leads one of the most intriguing ensembles in Jazz. Merging spontaneity and interplay with sparkling clarity, the group features Canadian trumpet veteran Kenny Wheeler and young lions Steve Coleman on alto and Tonight Show drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Yet with all its unique inventiveness, the Quintet also projects an utterly melodic mellowness.#1345 (62 min, Hi-Fi Stereo)
