Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Review
Whether you're installing your first garage door opener or replacing an old one, this is a great choice. First, it's supremely quiet, thanks to the vibration-free belt drive, and the 1/2-horsepower motor won't let you down over the years. And while most garage door openers have a light socket or two for perhaps a 60-watt bulb, this one has two sockets for two 100-watt bulbs, and the illumination in an otherwise dark garage is unparalleled. Speaking of illumination, we also liked the SoftGlo wall button because it's a cinch to find in the dark. It's also got a lock and a handy light switch.

As far as security, this model's ahead of the game with high-tech anti-burglary coding and a keyless entry pad as well as two remotes with three programmable buttons on each one, letting you control a separate door, gate or light. The unit itself weighs 39 pounds, so installation isn't a terrible ordeal, though you'll want to inventory all the hardware you'll need for the job, since it might not be included. Chamberlain's got top-notch customer service, and the motor in this opener has a lifetime warranty. Can't beat that.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

4 out of 5 stars Works well, installation so-so   October 10, 2005

Now that I have this opener installed, it works quite well. It's significantly quieter than the one it replaced (an old Stanley chain drive), and we've had no problems with it.

However, I found the installation to be a mixed bag. The instructions are clear and complete. The pieces were all there, and they all fit together properly. That's more than I can say for a lot of other products I've tried to assemble. But, at least for our installation, it seemed like there was too much stuff "not included." Aside from the pieces in the box, I had to supply: a bracket, bolts and nuts for mounting the opener to the ceiling (thankfully the hardware from the old opener worked with some slight modification); a reinforcement, bolts and nuts for attaching the opener arm to the wood garage door; extension brackets hardware to mount the electronic eyes to the floor by the garage door; additional cable staples to hold down the sensor wires.

None of these things are expensive or difficult to get. But it's a frustration to open the box and have to go to the store to buy a whole bunch more stuff to finish the project (if you were foolish enough to not read the instructions completely through ahead of time, you might have to stop work in the middle of installation). One of the pieces (the extension brackets for the electonic eyes) was a special order item, so I couldn't just run to the store and get it. In fact, I almost couldn't even order it online -- Chamberlain doesn't list it on their website catalog, so you may have to call them for it. I happened across another company selling it online, so I bought it from them.

I understand that Chamberlain can't include every possible optional piece that is necessary for every installation. However, some of these are very commonly needed, and would be very inexpensive for them to include. How many people have wood garage doors? A LOT, and the pieces needed for that install are not included. How many people need to mount their electric eyes somewhere other than clipped to the opener rails? I'd bet quite a few, but the small and inexpensive piece necessary to do so is a special order item. How many people need to mount the opener to the ceiling? Virtually everyone (though I can probably give them this one; mounting situations are so variable that it might be impractical to include all of the hardware for that).

I'm happy with this product, but the installation process would be a lot more pleasant if Chamberlain could spend the extra couple of bucks to include more of the commonly required hardware.

I just installed the opener today. Fairly easy to install. I was able to use some of the exisiting hardware from the previous installation so I didn't have to worry about hangers or the wall or door mounts. The settings were pretty close right out of the box for distance and force. This has all the safety features that I was looking for plus it is very quiet. It is below our bedroom so I went with the belt drive. Much quieter than the LiftMaster chain drive it replaced. Besides all the usual bells and whistles that pretty much all the combo sets have (2 openers, rolling code, outside keypad, safety beam eyes) it has a cool feature that lets you add devices from the wall mount so you don't have to get up on a stool or ladder to press the "learn" button on the motor. The 2 100 watt lights are nice and bright. So far no complaints.

3 out of 5 stars Only supports 7 foot door.. 8 foot Mod kit extra $$$   August 27, 2006

The opener has been installed for approx 2 weeks and has been working fine after I overcame two significant problems

1. The opener is packaged to support a 7 foot door not a 8 ft door. I didn't figure this out until the installation was complete. I had to order and spend approx. $60 more to buy the 8ft extension mod kit from the mfg. The mod kit requires you to uninstall the unit (drop it back to the floor) remove front bar and replace belt and tension spring..

THE 7FT LIMITATION IS NOT STATED ON THE AMAZON WEB PAGE

2. The belt would twist slightly between the right side of tension spring and motor. The mfg. sent new belt and spring assy. which didn't resolve issue. I ended up modifying the spring assy and the opener is now running fine.

If I had known that a mod kit was needed I would never have ordered the opener $$$$$$$

4 out of 5 stars Three years of service so far without any troubles   November 8, 2005

I installed this garage door opener soon after I purchased my first house. I was a DIY'er in training at the time, and this was one of my first projects as a new homeowner. It wasn't the easiest installation, but it was not overly challenging. I agree with one of the reviewers that a few pieces of hardware had to be purchased to complete the installation. This was mostly angle iron and a few bolts to hang the unit from the ceiling. In addition, you really NEED to reinforce your garage door. I made the mistake of thinking any new garage door should certainly be designed to work with a door opener without modification. Wrong! My wife managed to crumple the top of the garage door one day by trying to use the opener when the garage door was locked shut. Fortunately, I was able to straighten the door panel out. I then added the necessary reinforcement to prevent this from happening again.

As far as humidity being a problem, I have no idea what this person's problem is. I live in Austin, TX, which can be fairly humid and have had absolutely no problems. All I can guess is that this person must live underwater.

My only two gripes are the lack of a complete installation hardware kit and the remote keypad, which sometimes needs to have 'enter' pressed twice for it to work. Otherwise, this has been an excellent unit and I highly recommend it. Unless you live underwater.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible machine after 1 and a half years. Stupid design.   April 5, 2007

I have had this machine for a year and a half. The stupid thing was supposed to have a long warranty on the belt and parts.

I started noticing it was closing and going back up. I thought it was the misaligned beams, but it was not.

I noticed a black ring on the ground and did not know where it came from.

Later the stupid thing would choke on itself.

Come to find out after it would not close anymore the wheel that belt turned at the garage side broke. The stupid thing was made of plastic and the belt ate away at the bottom rim, so that was where the ring came from. It had chaffed away the bottom of the plastic wheel.

My question is, what numbnutt would design a garage door opener with a part that obviously faces the most stress from cheap plastic? The piece is so cheap, you could swear it belongs in your kids toy box. It chaffed away and the belt got chewed.

Could they have spent an extra 3 bucks to have made it from aluminum, if that?

The motor works fine, but the design is stupid and does not last. I had a contractor install it. I will never buy a belt driven garage door anymore. Who cares if it is quiet, you can still hear it opening from inside the house.

Do not buy till they replace the plastic pully wheel on the other end of the garage door opener. I know a lot of people just bought it, but I have owned it for a year and a half. The customer service person was nice and sent me a new part, but a week later that one broke.

So I am really mad. If they had made it of metal it would not have chaffed again even with the new belt.
