Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Every home lawn enthusiast needs a reliable trimmer. When it comes to performance in the front or back yard, the Grass Hog 14-inch automatic feed string trimmer and edger provides what you need. This tool is powered by a 4.8 Amp electric motor that spins the line at 9,500 rpm and gives you a 14-inch cutting swath. An Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) system eliminates the need to bump the trimmer against the ground every time the line breaks. And the 30-foot, factory-wound spool is easy to install and replace. Head adjustment is quick and easy, too, when the Groom'N'Edge head rotates 180 degrees; just press the button, rotate the handle and wait for it to lock in place. The patented cord retention system helps prevent accidental unplugging while in use. This trimmer comes equipped with an auxiliary handle for added comfort and control. The handle rotates a full 360 degrees and the soft grip can be moved up and down to ensure the perfect fit, whatever size the operator may be. A flip-down edge guide ensures precise trimming and edging work. At just 5.2 pounds, this product is easy for just about anyone to use. This product is backed by a 2-year full warranty. --Carl Thress

3 out of 5 stars Not Too bad   May 28, 2003

I have traditionally found that B&D lawn tools are pretty good and this weed wacker works just fine. It trims well, the "rotating head action" helps with edging, and it is reasonably powerful. I only gave it three stars (I would actually give it two and a half if I could) because 1) It does use a lot of string. I would also suggest wearing long pants when using this thing because the string advances automatically during use and the piece that is cut off goes flying. I got a couple of "wacks" on my legs from this. My daughter got hit once too so keep your kids out of range. I also found that it works better if you buy the replacement spools rather that buying string and winding it up yourself. I consider myself somewhat handy but the line advancement never worked right when I purchased the string seperately (much cheaper) and wrapped it through/around the spool myself. The replacement spools get pricey after a while. Also, 2) I think this thing is a bit noisy. Especially when the string advances. It whacks against the string cutter in quite a loud fashion (in my opinion). However it does work and will do the job. I have no need or desire to replace it at this point. However when the time to replace it does come and if improvements are not made I will look hard at other models.

5 out of 5 stars Just Add A Grass Gator to Your Grass Hog-Perfect!   April 18, 2006

I just purchased one of these and it is almost perfect. I had a small string one and as stated in the other reviews, they use a lot of string and it is a pain replacing the spool and the string ones never cut like the gas ones. We all know the problems with the gas ones, but boy can they knock down the weeds. Well I was at Home Depot and spotted the perfect solution. This Grass Hog and the Grass Gator Electric Multi-Fit. No more string and with the power of the Black and Decker, I'm in Hog Heaven.(You knew that was coming.) The Grass Gator goes on easy and has a tough nylon blade, but it cuts like a metal blade, the kind you find only on gas powered trimmers. I managed to wack our fence a couple of times with the blades and they both survived the impact and the fence was fine. The replacement blades are easy to install and not very expensive. This is electric weed-wacking at its best. Perfect-Catherine

3 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 Under Specific Conditions Only   September 7, 2004

I've read the other reviews here after I bought this--read before you buy. On the bright side, the hog has not broken and I've had no problems with the feeder. I haven't used it enough to test how long the cutting string lasts. I'll need to use this more to see if it develops some or all of the problems mentioned by other reviewers. However, there are OTHER limitations to this machine.

This powerful tool cuts in 14-inch swathes at a time. It is not very precise because of the weight and size of the cutting path. I found the cutting guide (a piece of metal that hangs down from the tool) of limited use. As a result, I accidentally tore up part of a wooden edging that separates the lawn from an adjacent mulched area with plants. Another problem is that there is nothing to catch the flying grass and it wound up on the same mulched area. It looked awful, and I found myself picking up leaves of grass (though I was NOT in a Whitmanesque mood by this time) one by one. So much for saving time. The only thing that might help in the future is to lay a sheet over the mulched area adjacent to the lawn to catch the cuttings, and move the sheet as I go along. Perhaps this should come with a sheet? This is also a fairly noisy machine and takes up a fair amount of vertical storage.

I can recommend this if you want to go all out with your energy consumption and then use a grass blower to get rid of the cuttings. I don't have one of these, and it's possible that this would also blow away the wood chips (mulch) as well. Ideally, you have a huge lawn (thus justifying the 14 inch cutting path) that borders on cement. The cuttings fly either onto the lawn or on the cement, and you or the wind can blow it away. One nice thing is that you can rotate the handle so that the machine can trim lawn under protruding bushes or around rocks, etc. Because of the power of the machine, it will take some practice to maneuver it without so that only the lawn is cut. Another advantage is that, unlike other edgers, you don't need to "bump" the machine (literally lighting hitting it against the lawn) to advance the cutting wire. This was the main reason I bought this machine over smaller ones that probably would have been more suitable.

Although it's an impressive looking yard tool, I don't generally recommend it except under the conditions noted above. If you have a small enough yard, use some grass shears for edging. It'll probably take about as much time, you'll save money, and you have much better control.

5 out of 5 stars I would definitely recommend this   May 26, 2004

I have a small lot (8500 sq. ft.) and the rear portion had a fair amount of tall grass growing in a non-landscaped area. This thing chopped that stuff down no problem. I had a McCullough gas trimmer that couldn't take that stuff down.

I haven't had it long enough to comment on the line use issues, but i think for ~$50 this is a great value. It does a lot better edging my bermuda lawn than the dedicated Craftsman edger that I had (used a blade).

So basically this outperforms 2 units that had a combined cost of around $200 for me. So far I am thrilled with it. Don't worry about it not having the power to do basic trimming. This has converted me to electric trimmers for the foreseeable future.

I bought this at Lowe's and enjoy it on my 1/2 acre. I never had one before but knew I didn't want a gas trimmer for noise and having to yank on a string like a mower. I find the noise level acceptable. True I keep at least one roll of string on hand since I use this to clean out the open ditch in front of my house. But so easy to replace (just pop out the old and in with the new) I can't complain. And long pants are a MUST. One stinging gash will speak volumes to you.
