So far, so good.... March 29, 2008 Molly A. Wall (Winston-Salem, NC United States) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
Researched self propelled walk behind lawnmowers for weeks, talked to many about my issue-mowing on a hill. Came to this particular mower because of the honda motor, rear wheel drive, self propelled system with blade shut off. I got it out of the box, scanned the instructions, put oil and gas in it, and mowed. Bottom line-it won't do your taxes or cook for you, but it will mow grass. And you don't have to push it up the hill like you would if it were front wheel drive-it pushes itself. I bought it from Amazon because I was so afraid of getting a defective product-all the issues I had heard about seemed to deal with defective product out of the box, and I have never had an unresolved problem with Amazon, so now I am glad I did all the research, and I am happy with my decision. June 2008 Still feel the same-mower has been great, no problems, handles the hills like a champ, blade stop is nice as I have trees that sometimes shed branches and I don't have to stop the mower to move them
My new Lawn Boy May 16, 2008 V. Rotariu (Dallas, TX USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
A bit pricey, otherwise a decent little machine. The things I don't like: Small wheels, makes it very difficult to climb curbs. I'm not sold 100% on the sense a speed system since it has a tendency to engage kind of rough at times. Also it is not that great in vacuuming all the clippings, so when you roll from grass to the side walk it will make a mess. The things I like: The Honda motor is very smooth and much quieter than other motors out there. The easy starting feature is a blast, especially since it doesn't require any priming or choking. The blade control feature it's amazing, it lets you empty the bag without turning off the motor. And last, the bag removes very easy using just one hand. Much better design then most mowers out there, which require the use of both hands. Overall it is a pretty nice little machine but I wish it had a bigger bag and the one lever height adjustment. Amazon price is unbeatable with fast, free delivery and of course, no tax.
Buyers Beware July 30, 2008 Michael T. Horak (Culpeper, VA. USA) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
Buyers Beware I ordered this item and received it (Signature Required) Filled it with gas and oil as described in the manual! It took 20 min to start it! After cutting for a 1/2 hour the mower quit, it has no compression and will not start at all. I called AOL. to file a compliant, here is their response. Thanks for contacting us at Amazon.com. I apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced with this lawn mower. We're sorry, but due to safety reasons, we cannot accept the return of any hazardous materials--these include items that are gas-powered, use propane or natural gas, or include a magnet--at any of our fulfillment centers. The risk of accident is simply too great. If the lawn mower needs to be serviced or replaced, we recommend that you work with a local authorized dealer or contact the manufacturer directly: Lawn-Boy This is completely unacceptable. The mower is brand new and now I am suppose to make arrangements to get it fixed or replaced when under any other circumstances this would has been swapped out for a new one or I would have received my money back! Now I am stuck with a $500.00 peace of junk. I am really disappointed with AOL and Lawn-Boy!!! Michael Horak
Still have to mow the grass... August 18, 2008 Electronics Reviewer (Washington DC, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Ordered this lawnmower after my 6 year old Craftsman 21" self-propelled stopped "self-propelling" and the bag would not stay on. I did the research on Consumer Reports and Lawnboy mowers were in the top 5. A couple of comments: 1. Shipping took 10 days with free super saver. The mower was being prepped for shipment for 7 days and then took 3 days to deliver via UPS ground. Delivery guys took one large box off truck and brought it right into garage. 2. The setup was very easy. Open box, add oil and gas. The box was slightly scuffed up in transport but the mower arrived fine. The oil level dipstick is kind of hard to gauge with clean oil so I figured oil level based on the capacity in the manual and the markings on the bottle. 3. There are two plugs (a rear plug and side discharge plug) and a rear bag. The rear plug OR the rear bag HAVE to be in place for the mower to operate. It has a safety interlock. 4. The bag is very easy to attach. Seems smaller than the bag for the old Craftsman but I wound up emptying the same amount of times. Perhaps the grass was more compacted? 5. The self-propelled feature is better for long walks. The mower basically moves as fast as you want as you apply pressure on the handle. More pressure yields faster walking speed. No pressure stops the mower though the motor keeps operating. Using the machine in tight spots is harder than an "always on fixed speed" self-propelled mower. It's harder to apply the right pressure if you are standing to the side of the mower. 6. The Honda motor is MUCH quieter than the old motor. Runs great. You can actually talk to the neighbor when it's idling. 7. The deck on this mower is steel and not aluminum but don't know if that's a long term issue. I don't see it rusting and even if it did, who really cares? It's a mower not a Porsche. 8. Blade Control works well. You have to hold a bar against the handle to engage the blade rotation. Release the bar and the motor continues but the blade is supposed to stop in 3 seconds. The motor also goes to idle while the blade is not rotating. 9. Seems powerful enough for deep grass. Since I am not mulching I can't really tell how well it does that. Seems to have good suction to pick up leaves. 10. Registered the product on line at LawnBoy's site. Based on model and serial it came up as a 2006 model. Don't know if that's why Amazon is selling them at a good price and also don't know if there even is a later model. Again, it cuts grass so who cares? Summary: Works well. The combination of performance, ratings, features, price, and delivery seems to make it a good value. Delivery could have been faster from Amazon.
Good Mower July 13, 2008 B. Hodge (Lubbock, Tx) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this mower partially because the string on my 8 year old Craftsman broke, and partially because my 8 year old son could not push the Craftsman. I wanted to get a mower with front casters to make turning easy, but that drove the cost up significantly. This one advertised easy turn front wheels. I'm not sure whether the curve of the front wheels make it easy to turn or the overall balance of the mower, but it does turn fairly easy. I'm also impressed with the self propelled system. I like the way it speeds up as I speed up, but allows me to cut slowly around tight spots as needed. The only cons I have so far are that the mower is not the best of mulchers with the stock blade. I'm hoping it gets better when I get a mulching blade. I'm also not impressed with the back flap. It tends to fold up under the mower when you back up. All in all though, I'm quite happy with the mower and would definitely recommend one to a friend.
