5 out of 5 stars Great Mower, but you might have to adjust your mowing "style"   April 17, 2008

Edited for rating change - Downgrade to a 2 star - SAFETY ALERT!
    **********************************************************************
I wish I could change my rating on this mower. I still like the mower for the most part, but I've encountered several major issues!

    1) The front axle keeps falling out of it's socket WHILE I'm mowing. This causes me to have to stop, flip the mower over, wrestle the hardware back into place, then flip again to continue mowing. Sometimes the wheels fall out again as I'm flipping the mower upright, so I have to do it again. I also have to be very careful while maneuvering the mower to reduce this issue. You can't let the front wheels be in the air for long! And don't even try uneven terrain. My biggest nemesis is the curb.

    2) The axle problem turns into an !!IMMINENT SAFETY ISSUE! if you for any reason fail to remove the key from the starter while flipping the mower. (Yes, the reason may actually include stupidity, but in my mind it was more anger and frustration) Anyway, I did this once! When I turned the mower over, the key was gradually depressed into the ignition box which then allowed the starter bar to fall at the will of gravity. As the mower was upside down, and I was reaching to replace the wheels into their socket, the mower started and I was badly cut. I'm thankful I was alert, because I think it actually could have turned out much worse if I wasn't.

I now remove both the key AND the battery prior to flipping the mower over.

When I first purchased my home, I was so ecstatic to be cutting the grass, I purchase a push-reel mower, and LOVED IT! 8 years later, not so much... I've done a lot of lawn renovation, which has unfortunately made the grass thicker and harder to push through. And I really have gotten tired of Mother Nature making the grass grow faster than I wanted to be cutting it. So, this year I've treated myself to a still environmentally friendly, but more powerful mower. :-D

BTW, I'm avoiding Black & Decker because by all reports (and my own personal experiences with their other products) after 2 years their mowers die. I'm hoping Remington doesn't have the same built in recurring profit base time line.

First use, obviously the battery was not charged, I used the power cord. A few very minor disappointments:

    1) There's not even the smallest cord included with the mower. So, don't think you're getting a complete ready to go package.
    2) You need a specially rated power cord to use the mower or it will overheat (read the manual). Off to the hardware store, and $100 of extension cord later...
    3) I wanted a pretty long extension because my yard is long and narrow. As required, I got the 12 gauge rating for 150 feet. However, when I went to install said 12 gauge on the mower as recommended, it does not fit in the provided cord hitch. It's too thick for the opening. So, I wrapped it around the handle a couple of times... They need to make the hitch accept all of the possible extension cord options.

Anyway, so I got started. Started easy. Sounds great, not too loud. But right away I started getting a strange motor speed variation. At first it seemed like only on the uphill. I stopped, and started. Same problem. I checked everything out, and changed power sources. Then the problem seemed to go away... but then it came back. By the end of my first cutting, I realized I was simply moving too fast in certain sections! I guess being used to powering through with a reel mower, I set my pace too high. I found that once I slowed down a little, I didn't have the same trouble.

This mower may have achieved power mower "blade speed", but it doesn't have power mower "power". Don't get me wrong, it is ALL THE POWER YOU WILL NEED to cut your grass. You just won't be able to rush through it, particularly if it has any length or thickness to it. You will have to modify your pace, which also means you probably won't sweat as much. ;-) But it will take a tad longer if you're used to a power mower. However, if you're used to a reel mower, the job gets done in less than 1/3 of the time!

I also REALLY like the mulching functionality. I have fescue and like to let the nutrients return to the soil as I cut. I really didn't see ANY grass clippings left "on top", and very few made it to the pavement around the edges of the yard as well. Really, REALLY LOVE THE MULCHING!

Overall, as a previous reel push mower user this mower is FABULOUS! However, I can imagine if you're used to a gas powered mower, you might have a different mindset/mowing style shift. But, I also think it's well worth the shift.

Oh, and 40 lbs without the battery! Very easy to maneuver. :-D Super Happy camper here.

PS - Just read the manual a little closer. There is a "boost" setting which is supposed to give you "power mower blade speed" for tall or thick grass cutting. I was using the regular 120V external power setting during my first cutting. I have not yet tried the boosted power functionality. It may allow for a "quicker cut" if you're in a hurry, but I don't know at this point.

1 out of 5 stars Should Have Purchased the Black & Decker.   April 13, 2008

The Remington 17-in 60-Volt Cordless/Corded Lawn Mower was delivered promptly and it is extremely quite to use.

The assembly was relatively easy. It had to be because the assembly instructions were useless, as the assembly photos useless because they are too small to decipher.

This mower has several design flaws I will detail below.

When I attempted to remove the electrical cord after my first battery charge, the plug pulled out of the mower body, exposing 3 covered electric wires. With a little effort it can be pushed back in place. This happens every time I remove the electric cord used for charging. My home fix for this was to use a very short cord with one end permanently plugged into the mower and the loose end attached with several nylon ties.

I have mowed my lawn 3 times with battery power only and have found the following to hold true.

The mower bogs down if you attempt to cut more than 1.25 inches of grass at one time.

If the cutting height is set at less than 3 inches the clippings basket drags on the ground. Even at the 3 inch setting it will drag when it starts to fill with grass. After 3 cuttings I can see wear on the underside of the basket.

I have to stop every 5 minutes, remove the clippings basket and push the grass further back into the basket. You will know it is time to perform this task will you see glass clippings appear on the ground.

Have not tried the mulching mode or the corded mode. I have to write another review on these modes later.

    1 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment   April 27, 2008

Last winter I moved out of the city and into the suburbs. My lot is only .54 acre - that includes the front yard, side yard, and backyard. When spring came, I researched cordless rechargeable mowers and settled on the Remington Cordless Power Mower because of its 60V battery; I had hoped the product would at least be able to hold its charge for the front and side yards. If necessary, I'd finish the backyard the following day. Although this product has a corded option, if I wanted a plug-in mower I would have purchased one at a much cheaper rate. I was more interested in power and battery life.

The first unit arrived DOA. I plugged it in and the LED would not light on the charge panel. The 120V plug-in option would not fire up, either. A call to Customer Service at Remington concluded that I had a "bad board" and the rep shipped me out a replacement unit in under a week.

When I received the second unit it did charge OK. However, I immediately noticed a few disturbing quality control issues. The back left wheel and the front right wheel wobbled as if loose, but there was nothing to tighten. It looked like warped axel. In fact, the whole unit seemed poorly assembled. I could have lived with these aesthetic shortcomings, but what happened next was just unacceptable.

After getting solid LED on the charge panel, I pushed the mower out of my garage for its inaugural run. The mower cut half my front lawn (about .10 acre) before stopping. Although this was annoying, I thought maybe the battery just needed conditioning and it would improve with the next charge. The next morning I saw solid LED again and mowed before work. This time I completed my front yard and part of my side yard (again, about .10 acre) before running out of juice.

All told it took five charges and three days to complete my yard. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. Not only does the Remington Cordless Power Mower lose charge much faster than advertised, it is tremendously underpowered: it would choke on large clumps of grass and force me to back off and push slower to mow evenly.

I wanted to go green this year and tried to block out all the naysayers who insisted that cordless mowers are a waste of money. Sadly, they were right. I returned this second unit for a full refund.

So, I will now reluctantly join the millions of other gas-powered lawnmower owners. I will contribute to global warming and the depletion of our natural resources; I will breathe in exhaust while I mow and vapor fumes in my garage when not in use. And every time I yank and yank on the starter, I will long for the day when someone is capable of manufacturing a cordless mower that can not only mow a half acre, but also has the power (in cordless mode) of a gasoline mower.

1 out of 5 stars Shoddy Construction / Terrible Quality Control   April 21, 2008

    Starting with the positives:
This mower is a brilliant concept. The customer service people were prompt and helpful. The mower is quiet and the cutting is below average but probably on par with other cordless mowers.

    Huge negatives:
First mower would not charge battery, or run in corded mode, or boost mode. So I mowed with the charge that came on the battery and the front axle came off leaving front wheels dangling by height adjustment mechanism.

Replacement mower was sent by helpful customer service. It charged battery but popped GFCI breaker in corded and boost mode. Front left wheel fell off due to bad weld.

There seem to be real quality control issues across the board.
The 2nd mower came with the advertised water bottle that the first mower lacked. And yes who cares about a wonky water bottle but the fact that boxes are being packed different is worrisome.

The electrical switch and grounding problems tell me at least poor construction and probably poor engineering. The fact that the front axle pops in and out of the plastic without any retaining clamps, screws, etc. make it less sturdy then most childrens' toys.

Really, I was looking forward to this thing, so much so that I thought the first one was a fluke and went through the steps to get a replacement for it.

It seems the problem of low quality is the standard not the aberation.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Mower!   April 17, 2008

I LOVE this mower. It is the first environmentally friendly mower I've had that does everything it promises. It is quiet, has plenty of power without the cord, is light, effortless to start, cut my whole yard on one charging and has made mowing a breeze instead of something I dread. It even blasted right through the tall, heavy grass of the first mowing of the year...just make sure that the grass is completely dry before mowing. I'd buy one again in a second...thanks, Remington!!
