1 out of 5 stars Hi maintenance and high grass   May 17, 2008

Hi

I recently purchased a Pro series 5 gang mower.

Design:
Although the layout of the mower seems simple enough, the practical application leaves much to be desired. It was only after purchase and use when I saw that the mower was cutting about 80% of the grass that I called and was told that there are very low tolerance levels for the mower. As advertised the mower cuts grass up to 3.5 inches. So I set all the reels to the highest setting. However, when I called, I was told that the cutters don't cut anything over 4 inches high. So, for this thing to work, I have to cut the grass when it is between 3.5 inches (the blade height setting) and 4 inches. If by the off chance it rains or the grass just grows past 4 inches, the grass just doesn't get cut without a minimum of 4 passes.

Manufacturing:
Seeing the abysmal results of something that was probably slapped together on the Friday afternoon preceding a union barbeque, it is no wonder why Made in China really means something. While assembly was easy, it was within 10 minutes of the first use that I began to see problems. A very loud rattle within a wheel prevented operation on that reel. I could call in on the warranty and hassle with that or just take the wheel off. Did that to find that one of two primary bolts that held the wheel on had come completely unscrewed and was caught in the gears. Fixed that after mowing for 10 minutes.

Also of concern is the tread wear. I have used the mower for about 2 hours now and at this point, the tread on 5 different wheels is worn slick. This may be a poor materials issue instead of manufacture, but I really don't think this mower will last past this season.

After about 30 minutes of mowing, I noticed that three of the connecting pins that held the reels to the frame were just gone. Yes they were secured with the cheapo pins that came with the machine and either they fell out or just vaporized. Either way, I had to stop mowing go to tractor supply and get new pins. So far I've spent more time fixing this new mower than mowing.

But the worst....absolute worst of my experience with the mower is that every 5 minutes I have to stop mowing get off the tractor and go clear the blades. The slightest twig will completely gum up the works and bring the mower to a complete stop.

So if you live in a place where there are no trees, no twigs, where the ground is soft, and where the grass only grows to 3.5 inches high and then stops before it gets to 4 inches high, and you like tinkering with the reel mowers constant need for adjustment, and you don't mind getting about 80% of the grass cut on one or two passes, then this mower is a good investment. I've had women that don't need this much attention!

My advice to anyone is to stay from this mower. You're better off with a goat.
