Steaks break easily! June 29, 2008 T. Martin (Maryland) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought Malibu Solar Lights years ago & they were good for the money. I bought a set of these on sale last year and 2 steaks broke right away & another was broken by the garbage guy. The post diameter is much smaller than previous models & the steaks attach to the post with very small, easily broken connectors. They light nicely, so if you have a very soft area to put them, fine. If, on the other hand, your lawn gets hard after a few inches, either pre-form a hole with a tent steak or avoid these.
Just like the picture....but July 10, 2008 David Burrell (Sun Valley) I guess that my main complaint is that the lights I received are just like the picture. By that, I mean the actual size of the lights. These four lights arrived in a much smaller box than the Malibu lights I had purchased two summers ago at Lowes. After I opened the box, I saw why. Each light is the same color and design as those lights, but are only a little over 1/2 their size. If my girls were still little, and their play house was still in the back yard, these might look "cute" installed in front of it. Too bad, for me, that the size was not listed, and also, too bad for me, that the description inferred that the lights are made out of metal. The trim is but nothing else important is. The top of the light is metal, as is the bottom trim piece and 5" tube, but the middle and bottom of each light is made of a cheap, thin clear plastic, which is not impact resistant. Each assembled light, as shown in the picture, is about 8" tall, counting the 5" metal tube, by 4" wide, and weighs in at about 7 to 8 ounces. One of the bottom clear plastic pieces cracked and split when I inserted the short 5" metal tube that the black plastic ground stake fits into. As the other reviewer stated, you will have to dig a hole for these lights because they are too fragile and flimsy for any type of pressure at all. These were manufactured in China, and certainly show it as to the fit and finish. Too bad that Amazon neglected to mention that fact in the item description. UPDATE: These lights charged all day in bright sunlight, temp at 3:40 P.M. was 105 degrees, from 10:30 A.M. until 8:40 P.M.- just a bit over ten hours. The lights completely died out around 11:00 P.M. So, a little over two hours worth of light on a 10 hour charge. The batteries must be very old because new batteries will last up to 8-10 hours on a ten hour charge.
I'm happy with them July 11, 2008 FlamingoNut (NJ) I had gotten these on a lightning deal, for $20. If that deal comes up again, I'd purchase another set. They're nice looking, but not well made. I don't know of many landscape lights that would survive well after being stepped on or tripped over, and these are no exception. I honestly believe tripping over one of these might destroy it. I chose to put mine in a lightly traveled area, yet dark enough to warrant some additional low lighting. The picture does not show the full stake; a plastic piece (stake) that is inserted to the metal stake showing. It's not very sturdy, and might possibly cause problems with extreme weather, kind of like plastic plant pots left outside through all seasons, typical NJ weather. I might be bringing mine in for the winter. I did dig & toss the dirt before driving the stake into the ground, which was a painless process. The light itself is naturally not overwhelming, but bright enough in the spot I put them in to illuminate the path a bit. I have them in a very sunny spot, from late morning to late afternoon direct, hot sun. They come on at dusk. Normally, the landing off my deck is pitch black, so the little gleam of light is much appreciated. I came into this purchase NOT expecting a bright light; seriously, solar lights just don't cut it for some. I wanted something that would give me some light, at a low cost, that didn't require wiring or worrying about where to plug them in. I don't know the amount of time these lights will stay on; if I manage to wake up in the middle of the night, I'll check and edit my review.
Quality product at a great price! July 25, 2008 Bob Sacamano (Atlanta, GA United States) When I see this type of lighting in the neighborhood I am always unimpressed by the light output they produce. So, when this appeared in my gold box I figured I would take a chance with just four of them. Now I wish I would have bought another set. I have been using them for a couple of months now and they produce nice bright white light every night. They come with Nicad AA rechargeable batteries. I would have preferred Ni-Mh, which last much longer and hold more power. Before I assembled these I took the batteries and gave them a full charge with a charger I have, which is good for the batteries. If I see the lights looking a little dim, I will take out the batteries and give them a full refresh and recharge, which will keep the batteries in good shape for a long time. Also, I will be able to replace the batteries with a set of Ni-Mh that I have plenty of. In order to keep the solar collector working properly, you should clean the solar film periodically. So, these really are not set and forget as one might imagine. However, this is an excellent product and I am very happy with my purchase. With LED lights and AA rechargeable batteries, I expect these to last many years with minimal care.
Reliable and Easy to Install, but Lights Die Out Too Fast July 30, 2008 J. Graham (Nashville, TN United States) These lights were very easy to put together and get in the ground--took no more than 15 minutes to get all of them set up. I have them in my front walkway and they are exposed to full sun all day so they can get a full charge via their solar panels. They come on automatically and reliably at sunset. However, they last only 4-5 hours before dying out (the rechargeable batteries lose the charge). Also, the LED bulbs have a bright BLUE tint to them, which contrasts the more yellow tint of the rest of my house lights. Overall, a good product, but I wish that they lasted longer before burning out for the night. I also wish the LED wasn't so bright blue in color.
