I love this shredder November 2, 2004 Caleb's Granny (Perrysburg, OH United States) 81 out of 87 found this review helpful
I went to Target to purchase this paper shredder. I shred papers, and credit cards and have no trouble at all. It is fairly quiet and shreds the papers into an unreadable size, also the credit card. I was impressed! It has "jam resistant" rollers and it pulls the paper down with no effort at all. The basket is wide and holds quite a bit and is easy to empty into a trash bag. I had a hard time finding it at Target, though. I began my search in the Stationary section, but only found the cheap shredders. I kept looking and the "better" ones are in the electronics section, next to the cell phones! I would have paid twice the price for one that works this well! I have no complaints about it al all!
Don't waste your money!!!! August 29, 2004 M. Jones (Charlotte, NC) 55 out of 70 found this review helpful
I have had this shredder less than a year and it has already died and without any warning. It was working fine one day and then the next, nothing. I can say that it worked great while it was working. I truely regret not saving my receipt so that I could haul the piece of junk back to Target.
Not much worse or better than other shredders in its class February 18, 2006 dampship (Cortlandt Manor, NY) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
Before purchasing the Royal 85X, I owned a Royal 80X shredder for about 1 year before it went bad. It appears a couple of the plastic spacers between the shredder teeth cracked and began to clog with shreddings which eventually killed the unit. While I was able to get in touch with Royal's Customer Service Department rather quickly, they did little to help other than to refer me to an authorized service center. Unfortunately, the nearest service center was located about an hour away from where I live and Royal was not willing to assist with any kind of shipping. Simply put, the unit was out of warranty and was no longer their problem. After speaking with someone at the service center, I realized that it would have cost me more to repair the unit than it did to replace it. I chose to replace it with the Royal 85X. I did so because of price and the fact that this shredder is not much worse or better than other shredders in it's class. In addition, all shredder manufactuer's warranty their products similiarly. Let's face it, it's an affordable unit and if you're looking for a stylish compact design, this unit has it. However, do tread lightly when using this machine. I say this for the following reasons: 1) This machine gives off the impression that it can handle a little extra duty. DON'T DO IT! or you'll be purchasing a new unit in no time. 2) It does not shred 10 sheets at once, as advertised. If you attempt to shred more than 4-5 sheets at a time, you risk damaging this unit. 3)DO NOT exceed the recommended daily usage. This unit can not be "pushed" AT ALL! It simply can't handle more than the occasional shredding of personal documents. 4)THINK TWICE before shredding credit cards in this unit. 5)Once the unit is out of warranty, forget about any kind of customer service from Royal. You'll simply be on your own. The bottom line = It's very affordable, looks good and if you don't overuse or try to "push" this unit you should be able to make it last a long time.
I'd give it 0 stars if it was an option! June 30, 2006 K. Bauman (Michigan, USA) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I've had this POS for less than 5 months. It started to shred it's internals after about 4 months. Of course I didn't know exactly what was going on at the time, but now that it won't take paper at all, and will make only loud crunching noises, while spitting out gray pieces of plastic, I'm fairly confident that it's broken. A call to customer service (in India) led me to wanting to post reviews of this product. First thing I am supposed to do is write a letter to the warranty department. They will, within 2 weeks, send me a form to fill out and then include with the product that I must package up, drive to UPS, and ship to them, on my dime, to have repaired, or replaced, at their decision, and then wait for it to be shipped back to me. Of course I can't return it to where I purchased it, I can't talk to a manager, and they won't let me actually talk to someone in the warranty department. Will I ever willingly purchase another Royal product? The answer to that should be obvious. My only hope is they see the bad reviews they will get from me and other unhappy customers.
We pay for the warranty. March 23, 2006 buttonpusher (St. Louis, MO USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I recently bought the Ativa shredder model #1000? sku #708-237 from Office Depot on sale for $59.99. The sale said "Save $40", "Reg. $99.99". The next day I saw a Target ad for what looked to be the same shredder (Royal model #85x) for $39.88 so I bought it also. I opened both units at the same time to compare. Besides the box appearance, stickers and logos, the shredders were identical. I discovered the difference in price came from the difference in warranties. The Ativa came with a 5 year, carry-in to Office Depot and the Royal came with a 1 year, mail copy of receipt and explaination of defect to obtain an RA (return authorization). Any product that comes with an implied warranty, limited or otherwise, adds to the cost of an item for the manufacturer and subsequently the consumer. For me, I chose to return the $60 Ativa considering that $20 (half of purchase price) could go toward replacement if necessary within the last 4 years. I'm not sure this was a wise choice due to this being my first shredder. So far the unit has worked well in it's first week at my business.
