Best MG album since My Town June 11, 2008 Tony (East Coast, USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've been an MG fan since "Hillbilly Shoes" first came out in 1999 and have purchased every one of their albums since. I've always believed 2002's "My Town" to be the best record of their careers because it had such a consistent sound and rocked harder than most of their previous work ("Hell Yeah," "Good Clean Fun," etc). I consider it to be one of the best records of the decade, period - country or not. I listen to 2006's "Some People Change" and, while it was a decent album with some classics (three top 5 singles), it was a little too much of a departure from their hard-edged sound and the material wasn't quite as strong. I enjoyed it, but was slightly disappointed. Fast forward to 2008's "Back When I Knew It All" and I honestly have to say it is just about on par with "My Town." Each song legitimately sounds like it could be a top 5 single on country radio today, which speaks wonders about the strength of this material compared to other artists who pack an album with filler. Here's my brief thoughts on each song: 1.) The Big Revival - I could do without the 45 second preacher intro, but this song may rock harder than most anything they've recorded before. It's a great way to pump up the crowd for a concert opener, with both Eddie & Troy alternating vocals. 2.) Long Line of Losers - Solid straightforward country song from Eddie. I have a feeling this could see the same massive success on radio as "Lucky Man." 3.) Now You're Talkin' - Troy belts out this uptempo rocker and creates a vibe similar to "Hell Yeah." Very catchy. 4.) Back When I Knew It All - The hit first single with shared vocals from E&T. Believe it or not, as great as this song is it may even be the weakest song on the disc. The other tracks are just that good! 5.) Roll With Me - I believe this will be the 2nd single, and deservedly so. Troy has smooth vocals on this slower tune and the song itself has an unbelievable groove to it. The lyrics are also of great substance and will even attract fans outside of MG's immediate fanbase. Guaranteed hit! 6.) One In Every Crowd - A fun party song with both E&T that will surely be a hit at live shows. 7.) Look Some More - My favorite song on the album. A great upbeat southern rock track that almost every guy will be able to relate to. Troy puts a lot of power behind it and the prominent slide lead guitar makes this a great highlight! 8.) I Pick My Parties - I can easily see this energetic, upbeat party duet with Toby Keith turning into a #1 hit on radio. I doubt it will be released as a single, but fans will love and enjoy it. 9.) One Trip - Another southern rock tune from Troy with a power chorus. A tad more subdued than the heavy hitters like "Now You're Talkin" and "Look Some More," it still packs a punch. 10.) It Ain't About Easy - A great uptempo song with Eddie, who tends to give his songs a little more of a country flavor than Troy's. 11.) God Knows Who I Am - The only true slowed down ballad on the CD, it is well sung and co-written by Eddie, about being comfortable in his own skin despite his rough edges. Overall, "Back When I Knew It All" is Montgomery Gentry's second best album behind "My Town" and, after some more listens, may tie or surpass it as the best work of their career. Every track is strong and brings MG back to the rock sound they were missing on "Some People Change." Nine out of eleven of the songs are mid-to-fast paced, which will please fans looking for music to really get into. A great effort from country music's most talented & overlooked duo! ------------------- UPDATE 7/17/08: Now that I've had over a month to listen to this album, I can confidently say this is by far the best record Montgomery Gentry has produced thus far - even better than "My Town" which I praised so much in my original review. The songs hold up remarkably well after countless repeat listens. If you're a fan of country music, southern rock, or just really great music about real life do yourself a favor and pick up a copy!

IT'S M/G TIME!!!!!! June 10, 2008 K. Carlucci (Corpus Christi, Texas United States) You can always expect a good album from Montgomery Gentry. Every song is great but the last one kind of slows down the whole CD. It's a good thinking song called GOD KNOWS WHO I AM, but it just doesn't blend in very well with the other songs on the CD. Eddie and Troy do a good job on LONG LINE OF LOSERS and NOW YOU'RE TALKIN', both done by Kevin Fowler as well. The rest of the songs are crisp sounding and have a Southern Rock feel to them especially during the guitar solos. I gave this album 4 stars because it has that same sound as there past few CD's which are also good but they don't compare to TATTOOS AND SCARS and CARRYING ON, which are in a class all of there own. If you want to hear M/G when they were really rockin', buy those two albums as well.
Good album for their fans June 11, 2008 W. A. Montgomery I'm not the biggest Montgomery Gentry fan in the world, my wife however, is enough of a fan to make up for the both of us. I do like their music and enjoy seeing them live, but I'm nowhere near Superfan status. My wife insists on dragging me to see them any time they're within 150 miles and in 2 weeks we'll be seeing our 4th MG concert in 3 years. I picked up the new album today as a gift to her, but decided to give it a listen before she got the chance. She's going to like this album and I guess most of their fans will as well. There are a lot of radio-friendly tracks with the same Montgomery Gentry fare which always boils down to the same subjects - partying, drinking, life lessons, with a little bit of love thrown in. Nothing on the album particularly stands out as something that will draw new fans in and I didn't hear anything that makes me believe they are ready to take the country duo crown from Brooks & Dunn. At this point in their careers, they know who they are, what their fans want to hear, and are very comfortable with their place in country music. My only complaint (which really doesn't matter in the grand scheme) is that many of the tracks sounded the same to me. In particular, tracks 3,7,8, and 9, all start out with the same slide guitar lick - or very similar sounding licks. Tracks 1, 5, and 11 are the standouts with the bookend tracks 1 and 11 really feeling out of the place compared to the rest of the material. Track 5 - Roll With Me is probably my favorite on the entire disc. I do however give them credit for trying something different on the opening and closing songs. I just think they kind of miss the mark. Make no mistake, this is not a concept album or a duo trying to stretch new boundaries. This is Montgomery Gentry that you either love by now, or you don't.
Montgomery Gentry's BEST yet! June 11, 2008 Kris S. Flanigan (INDIANA, United States) This is their BEST album to date!! & I loved all of the others! It shows how much the boys have grown up! They are comfortable with who they are. This CD shows just why we love them!! 1. Big Revival. Kinda strange at the beginning, but don't skip it!! It's GREAT. I love the line with "Lay down your riches.... and give it alllll to me." 2. Long Line of Losers Eddie proclaims this is his story. I think he broke that chain!! He is definitely something to be proud of now!! The song tells a story of how his grandparents messed up, his parents messed up, so why should he be different? 3. Now You're Talking -- is one of my favorites from this cd. Talks about a woman reading her man's mind. How they want the same thing. At the CD release party in Chicago, Troy dedicated it to all of the men that found the right woman the first time around! Great upbeat song!! 4. Back When I Knew it All-- Is all about growing up & realizing they didn't know it all when the were younger! 5. Roll With Me Is a slower song about enjoying what you have & how far you've come. 6. One In Every Crowd is a funny song about how there's always a guy that seems to have it all, but in reality what does he have? This song is GREAT live! 7. Look Some More is about being afraid of commitment. Not wanting to settle down without knowing what else is out there. 8. I Pick My Parties (featuring Toby) Is about not parting all the time like they use to. They have to pick their parties instead of going to ALL of them. They can't be out all night & then get up to go to work the next morning. 9. One Trip is about looking back on your past & realizing that you can't go back & do it again. Enjoy life & take the time to do things right! 10. It Ain't About Easy -- Life isn't suppose to be easy. Enjoy what you have the good & the bad. 11. God Knows Who I Am -- They don't pretend to be something they are not. God knows who they are. Enjoy the CD & go see them in person! They put on a hell of a show!
