1 out of 5 stars The "Motortrend" of Home theater magazines.   July 17, 2005

This magazine is brought to you by the folks that wrote "Stereo Review." Only now they have a new name. This is the magazine that never met a piece of audio gear they did not like. They never compare various products against each other (in any meaningful way). They exclusively review gear made by the big (mostly Japanese) electronics firms and never touch upon the many wonderful & affordable equipment made by the small scale American, European and Chinese manufacturers.

1 out of 5 stars Poor equipment analysis and comparisons   January 7, 2004

S&V is a magazine that one would read if he/she were going to purchase a piece of home theater equipment and wanted to feel good about it. I don't think I have ever read a review of a piece of equipment that this magazine did not like. Very poor comparisons analysis and subjective reviews led me to stop reading this magazine. Home Theater and The Perfect Vision are much better mags if you want insightful reviews and comparisons of home theater gear.

4 out of 5 stars On the edge...   November 3, 2001

Sound & Vision provides good product reviews, tips on speaker placement and building a decent system, and reviews of DVDs and CDs. At times, though, they delve into the territory of audiophiles with big budgets. Nothing wrong with that, and in fact, they do seem to keep a good blend of budget and high-end products in their reviews.

3 out of 5 stars An okay mag that seems driven by ad revenue   December 5, 2005

The first impression I got on reading an issue was that the magazine is a mouthpiece for its advertiser's products. Seldom does one see a review that rates equipment in an "average" or, heaven forbid, "junk" status!

But if you can filter thru some of the content, then there is some fairly decent information for a beginner Home Theater enthusiast. I recall reading an article once that clearly explained the differences between Dolby Digital and DTS and what "DTS-ES" and all that verbiage meant. For someone like me, who was trying to determine if the extra $$ spent an AV Receiver featuring DTS was worth it (5 years ago) - this article was extremely informative.

That said, this is surely not one for the audio/videophile camp looking for cutting edge information and profound assessment on high end gear. Magazines like "The Perfect Vision" is perhaps more apt for a fairly seasoned enthusiast who has dabbled in some quality equipment before. Magazines like "Cargo" cater to the lower end of the spectrum - folks just looking for info on the latest gizmos.
S&V probably fits in the space between, and does a fairly decent job there.

Just my 2 cents :-)

5 out of 5 stars The latest news on audio and video.   October 6, 2002

If you want to keep track of the latest equipment and technological advances in the fields of music and movies -- with emphasis on home theater systems -- this magazine is for you. It is both authoritive and up-to-date. Although a lot of state-of-the-art audio and video components covered are rather expensive, Sound & Vision tries hard to also cover lower-priced systems when they are available. This is a very good magazine for serious audio/video fans.
