5 out of 5 stars Warning: highly addictive!   July 8, 2005

Senseo recently released several flavored varieties. Having always been partial to hazelnut coffee and being the happy owner of a Senseo coffee maker, I just had to give this new flavor a try. Well, let me tell you... I'm hooked! There is so much rich flavor in this coffee it's hard to believe the drink is calorie-free. It has the complex, subtle, thick texture and flavor of a fat- and carb-laden drink. If you've been worrying lately about the effects of your daily Caramel Macchiato on your waistline (not to mention your wallet) you have to give this coffee a try. It's wonderful and guilt-free! The pods are a little more expensive than regular varieties (the package is the same price but there are slightly fewer pods per bag) but boy is it worth that little extra!

This flavor was all I needed to decide me to buy a second Senseo machine for my office. It's very quiet and doesn't bother my cube neighbors, and it's already paid for itself because I no longer spend a fortune at the coffee shop for mediocre coffee: I have my "candy bar in a cup" (to quote Paula) right at my desk.

Senseo has a winner with this one... Give it a try!

1 out of 5 stars regrettably, no flavors besides weak and bitter   December 3, 2005

Let me preface by saying that I'm not a high-end coffee snob. I don't grind my own beans, I don't use a french press, I don't automatically turn my nose up at mass market coffees, and I like my coffee from Dunkin' Donuts more than from Starbucks. I enjoy good coffee, whether it's dark roast, decaf, flavored, Colombian, whatever, and I drink a LOT of it.

I got a Senseo free as part of a promotion and I really like the machine. But the Senseo brand coffee is absolutely awful. I started with the medium roast pods included in the machine and found them weak and bitter. Thinking that maybe I got a bad batch and that the pod format was better suited for flavored coffees, I ordered the 64-packs of Vienna and Killarney from Amazon and got them a couple of days ago. I was astounded to find that both flavors are the same - weak, bitter, and, worst yet, lacking of any of their advertised flavoring. I'm drinking another cup of the Killarney right now as I write this, trying to find something good to say about it, but I am totally baffled by the very positive reviews this coffee has been getting. I honestly can't taste any Irish cream whatsoever, the coffee is unpleasantly bitter, and it leaves a nasty acidy aftertaste that still lingers in my mouth. I feel like a chump for having spent $15 on each of these huge pod packs, because they're now all going in the trash.

Obviously, everyone has different tastes and your mileage may vary. But, please, before you spend a single cent on this coffee (or any other Senseo-brand coffees, apparently), try getting a free taste of it from a friend or at a store. If your experience is anything like mine, you will take a sip, grimace, and wonder how anyone could possibly give this coffee anything but 1 star.

4 out of 5 stars Better tasting than the Dark Roast pods   November 16, 2006

I loved the idea and ease of the Senseo, but I was never that crazy about the way the coffee tasted. The grocery stores do not offer much in the way of variety, so I decided to take a chance and order the Columbia Blend from Amazon. I have been very happy with the flavor of it compared to what I had been getting.

If you are up for a change and want a smoother flavor, but still a strong tasting coffee. Give it a try!

I will note that the bag only comes with 16 pods vs. 18 in the regular bags.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good   August 31, 2005

I absolutely love my Senseo, but the thing I had always been waiting for was options beyond Mild, Medium and Dark Roast coffee. Every now and then I need a different kick from my coffee and until now it wasn't a possibility.

The Vienna Hazelnut variety is quite good for hazelnut flavored coffee. My personal taste typically doesn't leave much room for liking nutty coffees. However, I am forced to make an exception for this one. It doesn't taste fake or cheap like many flavored coffees do. I prefer the other two varieties of Senseo flavored coffee more, but that is not to say that I dislike this variety, it's really quite wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars The SENSIBLE SENSEO - but with a bit 'o' blarney   February 12, 2007

I'm very much like reviewer R. Seeburger of Redwood City, CA. I love my Senseo machine. It's inexpensive to purchase and use. There is NO waste, and it takes very little time.

Where the pods themselves are concerned, I must admit that with the exception of the Vanilla Bistro pods (FIVE stars) the other flavors are just TOO subtle to be tasted. This is true of the Killarney blend reviewed here (and ESPECIALLY true of their "Vienna Hazelnut Waltz", which I do NOT recommend at all.) The Killarney is acceptable, and a nice change of pace, but there is a just HINT of "Irish Cream".

As for the Senseo machine itself, I am THRILLED with it. I DO wish there were a setting for a SIX ounce cup (rather than the 4 or 8 that are standard on the Senseo.) A four ounce cup is just a bit on the strong side, and the eight a bit too weak. (You are supposed to use two pods on the 8-ouce setting). But I understand the new "Super Deluxe" Senseo - in stainless steel - has this option, along with a very elegant analog clock. Which it, um, doesn't need.

But I digress...

The Killarney Irish Cream Coffee Pods aren't bad, but they aren't great, either. Stick with the Medium Roast and Vanilla Bistro and you won't go wrong!
