9.99 is a beautiful, must-see film.

Gorgeous and thought provoking February 23, 2010 A. Sherman (New York) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
$9.99 is a gorgeous film with amazing stop-motion animation and a thought-provoking story. Actually, multiple stories that wind together and apart and together again. You'll be talking about this film long after the credits roll. It's an experience worth considerably more than $9.99.
Slightly Less Than $10 December 30, 2009 Amos Lassen (Little Rock, Arkansas) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
"9.99"
Slightly Less than $10

If you have ever worked retail, you know the meaning of .99. For some reason we think that if we can get something for less than a dollar than we are saving money. Regent Releasing has acquired the distribution rights to "9.99", an animated feature that gives us less than $10 worth about the meaning of life.
We all wonder about the meaning of life and why we exist and now we are able to buy a book for 9.99 that tells us the answers and is filled with wonderful colored pictures.
Dave Peck is our unemployed, 28 year old hero who still lives at home and wants the world to know that he has found the answers to life's questions. Dave has unusual neighbors--an old man and his guardian angel, a magician who is heavily in debt, a sexy woman who likes smooth men, a man with a broken heart who has become friends with students who are two inches tall and a young boy who has set his piggy bank free. Each of the neighbors has a story and they all come together under the theme of hope.
The film, directed by Tatia Rosenthal, is based on the short stories of Etgar Keret and the voices include those of Geoffrey Rush and Anthony LaPaglia.
The film is a co production between Israel and Australia and it was the first time that either had produced an animated feature. The animation is known as "stop motion" which was pioneered at the turn of the 19th century. It brings objects to life and is done by manipulating puppets through a series of still positions, photographing each position and then playing them as a continuous sequence.
We ultimately get a fascinating look at what life is all about in a way we have not seen before and it is wonderful.
