Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
It all starts with your brain: how you think, how you feel, how you interact with others, and how well you succeed in realizing your goals and dreams. When your brain works right, so do you. When it’s out of balance, you feel frustrated, or worse. Yet amid all the advice that bombards us daily about how to keep the rest of our body strong and healthy, we hear very little about how to keep the most complex and magnificent organ of all—the human brain—in top working order.

Based on the most up-to-date research, as well as on Dr. Daniel Amen’s more than twenty years of treating patients at the Amen Clinics, where he and his associates pioneered the use of brain imaging in clinical practice, Magnificent Mind at Any Age does exactly that. Dr. Amen shows how many of the traditional approaches to overcoming the mind-centered challenges that hold us back—try harder, work longer, find the sheer willpower—either do not work or may make our problems worse. The true key to satisfaction and success at any age is a healthy brain. By optimizing our brain function we can all develop these qualities of a magnificent mind enjoyed by the world’s most successful and happiest people:

• Increased memory and concentration
• The ability to maintain warm and satisfying relationships
• Undiminished sexual desire and performance
• Goal-oriented perseverance
• Better impulse control and mastery over potential addictions
• Free-flowing creativity and the ability to relax and enjoy life’s pleasures

To achieve this, as Dr. Amen explains here in clearly accessible language, we have a range of options available, including proper diet, natural supplements and vitamins, exercise, positive thinking habits, and, if needed, medication. In addition to revealing how we can all take advantage of such strategies to enjoy the benefits of a balanced and healthy brain at every stage of our lives, Dr. Amen also pinpoints specific ways to tailor behavior, nutrition, and lifestyle to deal effectively with common mental challenges such as memory problems, anxiety and depression, attention deficit disorder, and insomnia.

Whether you’re in the midst of a demanding career or are looking forward to an active and richly rewarding retirement, Magnificent Mind at Any Age can give you the edge you need to live every day to your fullest potential.

4 out of 5 stars Daniel Amen Loves Brains!   December 9, 2008

In Magnificent Mind at Any Age, Daniel Amen lets the reader know how much he loves brains. He talks about "brain envy," for example--what happens when someone sees an image of another person's brain that is healthier than their own. He informs us that he has improved the look of his brain from when he was in his 30's to his present age in the 50's. (Elimination of aspartame, for one.)

Amen writes: "A balanced brain is the foundation for a life that is happier, healthier, wealthier, and wise...If you really understand how to develop and take care of your brain, your life will be better no matter what your age."

I found scary when he describes the brain as soft--like tofu--and vulnerable to injury. Amen writes that millions of people suffer from mild traumatic brain injuries and don't even know it and that the injuries cause emotional, behavioral and cognitive problems.

The doctor recommends a healthy diet, exercise, positive thought, avoiding a toxic environment, gratitude, meditation, little alcohol and caffeine and other common sense basics for the health of the brain. He also recommends fish oil and a daily multiple vitamin.

There is room for more information on each of the subjects above, but there wouldn't be room in a single book. For more information on a healthy diet, I recommend WHAT TO EAT. For more on reducing toxins in the home/office, clutter elimination (which leads to stress), meditation and making a home a sanctuary (for relaxation and health,) read HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.

Amen then recommends specific natural remedies for those suffering from ADD, anxiety and depression.

So far, so good. It's part II of the book I have some trouble with, as I feel it is too far-reaching and that Amen's suggestions are unlikely to make real change.

I will use the chapter on how to become a Maverick Thinker as an example. Amen considers himself a maverick (I know, you are thinking Palin and McCain...) According to Amen, a maverick is one who is an independent thinker. He believes that over control, dependence, anxiety and stress inhibit independent thinking. His strategies to help a person become a maverick include keeping brain healthy, work to be happy but work through tough times, and practice independent and personal responsibility.

Sounds good...but I just don't buy that someone who has always listened to others to form their own thoughts will read this and suddenly change.

There is much to be gained with from this book and I do recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars The timing of this book is great.   December 6, 2008

I just got this from the store and I skipped a few sections so keep that in mind. I thought it was pretty good. It felt a little robotic compared to the only other two books I've read like this, but that shouldn't keep you from reading this because despite that, it was really pretty good. Maybe I should have let the info sink in a little before writing this review, but my first reaction is that it's insightful and informative. For a few years now at least, I've started feeling a little like assimilating new information is getting harder for me to do. I find myself having to reread sentences and whole paragraphs in order to get a good grasp. At first I thought that maybe I was just reading more complex stuff than I used to or something like that, but it happens even reading the newspaper now, so I started to understand that there was more to it than simply the complexity of the info. The second I saw this book it caught my attention and the timing was great. It helped me to realize that there are things you can do to keep your brain functioning in good order despite the fact that your brain is getting older and less elastic. Well I guess the point is, you can change that by doing things to prevent your brain from losing its elasticity and efficiency. This book has a bunch of really good ideas on how to do that. So you don't have to do just one thing, there are many choices and you can mix and match them to your preference. I would recommend reading this book even if its just to get those ideas from it. The only other books I've read about brains and emotion stuff were, Tao Cycle Therapy: Natural Happiness via Self Directed Cure for Chronic Anxiety & Depression [Updated 2008 3nd Edition] and The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, Fourth Edition Compared to those two this one was also a solid choice along with them. I guess I've gotten lucky in those choices so I thought this might be helpful to give someone else some of that good fortune. I hope it helps.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but want a little more information   December 9, 2008

Hi All-

I picked up Dr. Amen's book at a bookstore and found it interesting but a little dry. It takes several chapters to make its point and to understand what it is you need to do to preserve your brain. I found, however, Dr. Amen's recommendations to be sound, following recommendations that are well know or common sense. I would have liked a little more information on why Dr. Amen places so much importance on SPECT Scans.

If you are looking for a lifestyle or diet plan, I found The Anti-Alzheimer's Prescription: The Science-Proven Plan to Start at Any Age by Dr. Vincent Fortanasce to be more useful and easy to follow. The book clearly gives a 4-Step lifestyle plan from the beginning and the author offers personal stories and experiences making it more interesting to read and insightful.

Hope this helps!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a gem!   December 14, 2008

This book is a jewel because of its beauty, which is rare and powerful. For this, I have to write that reading this book gave me a beautiful shock. Let me explain my reaction in two thoughts:

The first is suggested in the title of Chapter 5: IF YOU WERE MY FAMILY, HOW WOULD I TREAT YOU? Few medical doctors share, with modesty, their personal experiences and the tools they use to make their diagnoses and treatments. I was surprised to see how Dr.Amen, candidly shares the four circles of health and healing and why one should consider natural treatments. This concept is not new to the sciences of human behavior. However, to consider the transcendent or spiritual dimension of the person as an equally important dimension as the biological, social and psychological is little regarded by men and women in charge of today's health sciences.

The second concept that has caught my attention is how freely Dr. Amen writes about the power of lies in our lives. In chapter 12: EMBRACE THE TRUTH, Dr.Amen helps us to discover how automatic negative thoughts (ANT's) poisons our brains and pollute our reading of reality as well as the reading of the historical events of our lives. In every chapter, the author transmits his wisdom and generously shares the exercises that many of his patients have found to be beneficial to improve their brain and their life.

I think that this book is a gift of hope for those who are still seeking answers to the questions that nobody has been able to answer them. In my experience as a psychologist, I may say without exaggeration that this book is a gem. I am grateful for it.

1 out of 5 stars SPECT SCANS   December 30, 2008

To answer one of the prior reviewer questions. Why does Dr Amen rely so heavily on SPECT studies? The reason is he makes a living doing SPECT scans on difficult to evaluate illnesses such as ADD. Unsuspecting parents pay out of pocket for studies that only Dr Amen has been able to prove are of any value. Cerebral perfusion studies are rarely performed in clinical practise due to the non specific nature of the findings.
