Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When it comes to writing deftly layered, tightly coiled novels of suspense, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Kellerman reigns supreme as “master of the psychological thriller” (People). Now, Kellerman has worked his magic again in this chilling new masterpiece.

The anonymous caller has an ominous tone and an unnerving message about something “real dead . . . buried in your marsh.” The eco-volunteer on the other end of the phone thinks it’s a prank, but when a young woman’s body turns up in L.A.’s Bird Marsh preserve no one’s laughing. And when the bones of more victims surface, homicide detective Milo Sturgis realizes the city’s under siege to an insidious killer. Milo’s first move: calling in psychologist Alex Delaware.

The murdered women are prostitutes–except the most recent victim; a brilliant young musician from the East Coast, employed by a wealthy family to tutor a musical prodigy, Selena Bass seems out of place in the marsh’s grim tableau.

Conveniently–perhaps ominously–Selena’s blueblood employers are nowhere to be found, and their estate’s jittery caretaker raises hackles. But Milo’s instincts and Alex’s insight are too well-honed to settle for easy answers, even given the dark secrets in this troubled man’s past. Their investigation unearths disturbing layers–about victims, potential victims, and suspects alike–plunging even deeper into the murky marsh’s enigmatic depths.

Bizarre details of the crimes suggest a devilish serial killer prowling L.A.’s gritty streets. But when a new murder deviates from the pattern, derailing a possible profile, Alex and Milo must look beyond the suspicion of madness and consider an even more sinister mind at work. Answers don’t come easy, but the darkest of drives and desires may fuel the most devious of foes.

Bones is classic Kellerman–relentlessly peeling back the skin and psyches of its characters and revealing the shadows and sins of the souls beneath. With jolt after jolt of galvanizing suspense, it drives the reader through its twists and turns toward a climax as satisfying as it is shattering.

4 out of 5 stars He's back in fine form   October 21, 2008

Jonathan Kellerman's books have been up and down for me in the last few years. It seems that once Robin left, the storylines left with her.

However, in Bones, Kellerman's newest book, I finally found the "old" Alex. Witty, genuine, interesting. The story of murder of prostitutes and of a music prodigy is the center plot, but for me, what worked best in this novel was the strength of the Alex character (something that had been missing in the last few books) he felt present in this storyline.

Of course, Milo is back and the banter and relationship between these two is always priceless.

The story moves at a rapid pace and was intriguing enough to keep me reading throughout with an ending that was a tad predictable, but nonetheless satisfying.

Finally, Alex is back.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining whodunit   October 23, 2008

High school troublemaker Chance Brandt is doing community service at the Bird Marsh nature conservatory near Marina Del Rey, California when he receives a weird anonymous phone call that he assumes is a silly prank. The caller insists there are corpses buried in the marsh. Soon after the eerie call, the body of a woman is found and Chance mentions the message he received.

LAPD Special case Investigator Police Lieutenant Milo Sturgis leads the investigation. They quickly find four female bodies with the right hand removed in the marsh. Realizing there is a serial killer on the loose murdering prostitutes though the last homicide does not fit the victims' pattern as the victim is musician Selena Bass. Milo asks police psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware to help. The focus is on the Bass murder as she was teaching piano to the wealthy offspring of the Vander family with the estate manager the prime suspect due to a criminal history.

Although somewhat similar to most of the Delaware police procedurals, BONES is refreshed by the psychologist playing third fiddle on the investigation with Sturgis being the star; he provides limited assistance on the investigation. The serial killer inquiry is clever and fun to follow with a couple of strong twists. In spite of the hero playing a tertiary role in the case (although Delaware has other goings-on), fans will enjoy Jonathan Kellerman entertaining whodunit.

5 out of 5 stars Deft and fast paced--one you'll enjoy!   October 28, 2008

Alex is back, and this is one of his better books. When one body is found in a protected wetland, oddly, with a hand missing, the chase is on. Within a short time, more bodies missing hands have been located in the same marsh. All the bodies face east and all except the latest one were prostitutes. Apparently, a serial killer is stalking LA, and Alex and Milo are in pursuit.

The characters in "Bones" are memorable, including an environmental fanatic, a genius child set to inherit a mind boggling fortune, a smarmy rich teenager so awful even his mother can barely stand him, and, I kid you not, a fifty year old prostitute. It's entertaining. It's quick. It's one not to miss.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile weekend read...   October 25, 2008

Bones by Jonathan Kellerman is yet another installment, the 23rd in the series. For Kellerman fans, readers will find familiar characters in familiar situations. What makes Bones a worthwhile read is Kellermans mastery of slowly revealing the story; fact by fact, like peeling the layers of an onion away. Not an original example, but certainly and apt one.
The storyline is pretty straightforward. An anonymous tip leads to the discovery of a murderer's graveyard containing the bodies of murdered prostitutes. That is, until the last killing, which involves a music teacher hired from the east coast to teach music to a young prodigy living on a large estate. LAPD Lt. Milo Sturgis is called in and he in turn brings in Alex Delaware to the investigation. The victim's bodies, all missing the right hand, indicate that a serial killer is on the loose and racking up victims. When a storage locker is found to contain the missing hands the story tightens. Without giving away too much, Bones is a tightly developed story and sure to keep you interested; it worked for me.
I have to agree with another reviewer that toward the end the outcome seemed pretty obvious to me. I would not place this at the top of Kellerman's list of great novels, but I did find it satisfying.
I recommend.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Entry in the Alex Delaware Series   November 10, 2008

Jonathan Kellerman has returned to his roots in this entry in the Delaware series, leaving behind the much-criticized passive-aggressive soap opera revolving around Delaware's relationship with live-in girlfriend Robin.

Thank God! That was boring beyond tears.

We are now back to the essential Alex: a tough crime with psychological overtones; the witty banter with Milo; the quirky and unique "only in LA" characters and suspects; all revealing the weird wonder that is Los Angeles.

I live in LA County and can attest to his skill at portraying how strange this place is, rightfully earning the sobriquet "LaLa Land". Sun-washed weirdness, which Kellerman portrays so well.

A fast-paced, highly entertaining book. If you're a classic Delaware fan, don't miss it!
