Editorial Reviews:

From the Manufacturer
The Pulstar pulse plug represents the first technological advancement in spark plug design in the past 100 years. Enerpulse, the manufacturer of the Pulstar pulse plug, develops environmentally-friendly ignition products through the application of Pulsed Power Technology (PPT). Pulstar pulse plugs were designed to increase peak power of the spark plug so it can ignite gasoline in the engine's cylinder more completely with less cycle-to-cycle variation. The result is more engine torque, more horsepower, and better fuel economy.

Test results show significant improvements over spark plugs.
Better Fuel Economy
Pulstar pulse plugs improve engine efficiency at the very moment of ignition by increasing the spark volume and energy density. Increasing the energy density of the spark makes ignition more precise with less cycle-to-cycle variation resulting in better fuel economy and driving performance than available from spark plugs.

Increase Horsepower and Torque
Pulstar pulse plugs look and fit like spark plugs, but incorporate an internal capacitor to deliver a spark 10 times more powerful than a spark plug. This faster ignition burns more of the fuel in the combustion chamber, generating more pressure in the cylinder. The increased cylinder pressure pushes the piston down with more force, which in turn, generates more torque to the crankshaft, more liveliness to the throttle, and more power to the wheels.

The Pulse circuit releases a powerful pulse of power.

Test Data
Recent tests demonstrate that Pulstar pulse plugs improved the fuel economy on 2005 and 2007 Prius Hybrid vehicles by 6% to 8%, or approximately 3-mpg. This 3-mpg increase produced by Pulstar means that over its life of approximately 4 years, carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 1,344 pounds or over half a ton, making it evident even small changes like changing your spark plugs can translate into big differences for the planet.

Product Guarantee
Pulstar pulse plugs are safe to use in all vehicles. They come with a 30-day no questions asked return policy and are guaranteed not to void your car's manufacturer warranty or damage your engine when properly installed.

1 out of 5 stars One of many false claims to increase power or milage   August 16, 2008

Over the years I have seen many claims to increase power or milage by inserting something into the ignition system. Usually I am resistant to them. But, reading about the Pulstar plugs I reasoned there just might be something to their claim. After all, the video at their web site illustrates a far hotter, and better spark.

My vehicle is a Jeep Wrangler, with an in-line 6 cylinder engine. At 500 miles I replaced the factory NGKs with Bosch +4. I keep a detailed milage log, out of habit. At 91,000 miles I decided to change the Bosch as I noticed my usually miserable highway mpg (19.2) had decreased to really miserable mpg (17.8).

Amazon is an excellent resource for many items I buy. Plus, I use Prime, so shipping is usually one cost for the entire year. Perusing through Amazon I stumbled upon the Pulse Plug.

Years ago, when there existed coils and distributors, a similar product claimed similar results. Insert this neat little device on the line from the coil to the distributor and said device would ramp up the voltage thus delivering a much hotter spark at the spark plug which will greatly improve your engines performance and your miles to the gallon of fuel. I bought one, and found the claim false.

Yet, the Pulse claims interested me. I bought 3 packs of 2 Pulse plugs. Math will disclose the total cost of my thoughts.

Now when your engine requires fresh spark plugs, any brand (properly matched to your engine) will deliver better performance and better mpg. Why else would you change your plugs?

So I was expecting some improvements in the engine, and increased mpg, from a fresh set of spark plugs. But, I was expecting more from the Pulse Plug. The Pulse plugs arrived and I had my mechanic install them.

One plug was defective and required replacement. Rather than go through Pulse, I returned it to Amazon. Amazon has a great customer service attitude, and easy return policy. (No, I do not work for nor do I have any financial consideration from Amazon). The new Pulse plug arrived promptly.

With a full set of 6 Pulse plugs in, and firing, I took a trip to see if my engine's performance changed.

Yes, my mpg was 19.8, the best I have recorded since before the engine had 20,000 miles on it. There seemed to be an improvement. The engine ran smoothly. There was a static hiss on the radio and CDs that was not there before.

Then, the ECU went out. I do not blame the Pulse plugs for this, but, the mechanic was not as sure.
Prior to replacing the ECU, the mechanic replaced the Pulse plugs on the chance that they were the problem. A fresh set of Bosch +4s went in. No change, so in went a new ECU ($600). The problem resolved.

The mechanic showed me the Pulse plugs. The ends were pitted, the porcelain protecting the electrodes were eroding, and the plug looked worse than the Bosch I had removed with 90,000 miles on them. The mechanic reasoned that the Pulse plugs were either not the correct ones for my engine, or sparked so hot that they would not last very long.

New ECU and fresh Bosch plugs in, I went on the same road trip. Milage was 20.1, engine ran smooth. Better milage with cheaper plugs. No noticeable change in performance between the Pulse plugs and fresh Bosch.

In the end the Pulse plugs delivered nothing extra. So, to answer the real question "is it worth it", from my perspective, no. Their high cost; lack of any mpg increase over cheaper plugs; no discernible power increase provided no reason to spend as much for the Pulse plugs as three sets of the Bosch.

In the end I found that for the same cost, a set of Bosch plugs and a longer visit at my local brew pub, suited my needs better.

4 out of 5 stars Pulstar Spark Plugs   July 6, 2008

I installed the Pulstar plugs in my 2008 Subaru Outback. I had been getting 27 - 27.2 MPG. The plugs have about 700 miles on them and the MPG has increased to 28.5 under the same conditions. The instructions say that you should give it a couple of tanks of gas before the computer recognizes the plugs and appears that this is true. The car seems to have more "Pick Up". At the present MPG it will take about 15000 miles before pay back is achieved.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Days, so far so good   May 21, 2008

I installed the BE-1 plugs on my 2007 Renault Clio 1.6L, 16 valves, 110 HP and 6,700 Km (4,165 miles). With only 5 days in the car and a little more than 100 miles with them, I can only give an opinion not supported by hard data. I know that this car is not available in the US, but it is similar to other subcompacr 5 door hatchbacks with small engines. Renault and Nissan are managed by the same CEO.

The only modification that I have in the engine is a K&N 57i air filter and now these plugs. My first impression is a more stable idle. This car used to have lots of variations while idling (normal on all Clios) which the K&N improved and now with the plugs feels smoother. It's worth mention that I'm in Mexico City at 2,240 meters above sea level (7,400 feet).

Second impression is a more linear acceleration. Renault Mexico advertises that this car can do 9.9 second 0-60 MPH (I bet that's at sea level). It had a sluggish start and around 2,500 starts to pick up until the revs limiter kicks in. With the plugs it feels quicker from the beginning.

Too soon to tell on fuel economy, will try to update this information in a few weeks when I run a few tanks.

Something that I noticed is that the temperature gauge is 1 click above what it used to be, but still well within the normal temperature range.

My driving is mostly on city traffic doing a lot of Stop & Go. It takes me 40 minutes to do the 10.5 miles between home and work.

I put these plugs on an 03 Acura CL-S 6pd wit 78,000 miles on it. Didn't improve anything. I guess they think it helps gas mileage by making your wallet lighter. Har har har... Stick with OEM.

1 out of 5 stars Pulstar Spark Plugs Cost me over 300$ in the end.   July 18, 2008

I ordered a set of 4 spark plugs from Pulstar for my Mitsubishi Lancer. Immediately after putting them in, my engine was skipping badly and my check engine light went on. After investigating, I discovered that it was cylinder 3, and no, it was not my wires or coils.

I removed the plug from cylinder 3 and put in one of the old plugs, and m engine was running smoothly again. I emailed Pulstar, and they were very helpful, sending me a replacement.

Three days after I installed the replacement my engine started skipping badly on my way home from work. With another 3-4 blocks t ogo, I just stuck it out. After I got home, I pulled the pulstar spark plugs and put my old ones in. My catalytic converter was shot.

I Emailed Pulstar, and recieved no response. I called and offered to ship the plugs back to them if they didn't believe me. They said they would call me back.

Thank you Pulstar. You damaged my car, you charged me a hundred dollars for a set of spark plugs, and you ignored me when it was time for repercussions.
